The Philosophy of the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law of Intercollege is that the goals of the education offered should be of the highest level so that our students are enabled to acquire the knowledge and skills and cultivate the abilities which will help them to succeed in their careers, enrich their lives, and successfully face the difficulties, but also the opportunities which they will meet. We believe that some of the greatest challenges and opportunities will, for many of our students, derive from the accession of Cyprus to the European Union.
In the various departments of the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law we have about seven hundred Cypriot and international undergraduate students and about fifty students enrolled in graduate programs.
Our students are taught by eighty-five internationally recruited faculty. You can see more information about their qualifications, research interests and publications in the following pages.
The School offers a wide range of programs with the aim of offering students a well-rounded education. The programs are organized in seven Departments.
Each Department offers a variety of programs and specializations which are interrelated, so that students have the opportunity to combine courses within the Department, from other Departments of the School, and even from other Schools, according to their interests and aptitudes.
The School of Business (SBA) is one of Cyprus’ major business education resources. We are the largest school in the University. Organizationally, our School consists of the departments of Accounting, Finance and Economics, Hospitality and Tourism, Management and Management Information Systems, and Marketing. The School also includes both the graduate MBA Office and the Center for Leisure, Tourism and Sport Research and Development (CLTS).
Our School’s vision is to be internationally recognized for our undergraduate and graduate business programmes in preparing leaders and entrepreneurs for success in the global market place, particularly in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Not surprisingly, we have been recognized often for our quality programmes and services. In fact, our graduates readily recommend us to their friends, and demand for our degree programs continues to outpace our capacity to accommodate it.
Our mission is to create enduring educational value for our students, for our alumni, and for the business and professional communities we serve:
- For our students-whom we prepare to succeed in a rapidly changing, technology-driven global business environment;
- For our alumni-to whom we provide opportunities for continuing professional development and a legacy that appreciates as our excellence grows;
- For the business and professional communities-to whom we offer knowledgeable graduates, educational programs, research, and collaborative projects.
A dynamic force for excellence within Cyprus' private tertiary educational system, our dedicated, multi-campus, full time faculty amounts to 57 academicians--27 are teaching research faculty (Ph.D. holders) and 30 are special teaching faculty. Additionally, we employ 35 part-time lecturers made up of business professionals, recognized experts in their respective fields.
The School’s student body is diverse and multicultural and reflects to some extent the demographics of Cyprus and the location of the island. At the undergraduate level, 69 percent of the student body is Cypriot and 31 percent international, with strong European and Asian representation. At the graduate level the reverse is true, with international students dominating (74% foreign to 26% local). Our gender ratio is 55% men to 45% women. The average age of undergraduates is 23 and for graduate students, 28.
The philosophy of the School of Sciences is that the education offered should be of the highest level so that our students are enabled to acquire the knowledge and skills and cultivate the abilities which will help them to succeed in their careers, enrich their lives, and successfully face the difficulties but also take advantage of the opportunities which they will meet.
The vision of the School of Sciences in a summarized form is to:
- Prepare good science graduates for postgraduate studies and to enter the workforce
- Strive for excellence in teaching and learning and provide a dynamic learning environment
- Promote research and education for research (especially in the MSc, PhD research degrees)
- Collaborate effectively with the academic and industry communities nationally and internationally
- Make available to society our science resources and human expertise
Our Departments and Programs
The School of Sciences is one of Cyprus’ few resources of education in the fields of science. Organizationally, our School consists of three departments, namely: Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Life & Health Sciences. The Department of Computer Science offers an undergraduate (BSc) program in Computer Science. The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering offers two programs in the disciplines of Computer Engineering (BSc) and Electrical Engineering (BSc). The Department of Life and Health Sciences offers two programs in the disciplines of Nursing (BSc) and Human Biology (BSc). The School is also affiliated to the Center of Applied Research & Technology (CART) which deals with scientific and technological research.
Our success is evidenced through the acknowledged satisfaction of the companies and organizations which have employed our graduates. Also, the success story of students who obtained their foundation (Bachelor degree) from us and went on to pursue graduate studies (Masters and Doctoral degrees) overseas is another piece of proof concerning the quality of our programs.
A dynamic force for excellence within Cyprus' private university educational system, our dedicated, full time faculty amount to 43 academics - 35 are teaching research faculty (PhD holders) and 8 are special teaching faculty. Additionally, we employ a small number of part-time lecturers made up of professionals, recognized experts in their respective fields.
The university library collection of over 95,000 volumes, more than 1,000 print journals and 6,000 electronic journals, and numerous online resources supports basic research. The university’s sizeable investments in its specialized computer labs, engineering labs, nursing skills lab, nursing simulation suite, biology lab, chemistry lab, biosciences research lab, molecular biology research lab, genetics and molecular biology research lab, food and nutrition lab, and human performance lab, along with a networked learning environment and multi-media classrooms give state-of-the-art information technology infrastructure and support to our students.
The School of Sciences has over 850 students. The School’s student body is diverse and multicultural and reflects, to some extent, the demographics of Cyprus and the location of the island; 34% of the student body is female and 66% is male; 20% of the students are international, with strong European and Asian representation, and 80% are Cypriot. This cross-cultural mix provides a rich base of views and practices to enhance and expand students’ perspectives for multinational scientific and technological environments.
What is special of the School of Education is the quality of graduate education at both the Masters and Doctoral level. Three variables define this quality. Firstly, the faculty who teach graduate courses come from Cyprus and Greece and are well known authorities in the areas of their specialization. Secondly, students who are admitted in the program enjoy high academic standing in their undergraduate study. Thirdly, the University provides students rich library resources, suitable designed seminar space and teaching rooms equipped with modern educational technology. Through the program students acquire, on the one hand, deep knowledge in the area of their specialization and, on the other hand, research skills and competences. As a result, the graduates of the program manage to be appointed into high level positions in the educational system, in tertiary education and in research centers as well as function as agents of new ideas in education and catalysts of innovation in education.
